ASJ-LAW Traineeships (Station) for German Legal Clerks (Rechtsreferendare/-innen)

Thank you for expressing interest in a traineeship (Station) as a German Legal Clerk (Rechtsreferendar/-in)! ASJ-LAW is always looking for passionate and talented German Legal Clerks to apply as trainees. A typical traineeship with ASJ-LAW as a German Legal Clerk covers three months.

We require excellent graduation records (Erste Prüfung) and English skills of our traineeship applicants, together with a well-documented strong interest in the practice of economic law (particularly labor, corporate, competition and energy) within the context of international markets. You should be flexible, open-minded and fun to work with even in stressful situations. Good Japanese skills are helpful but not required.

What trainees may expect

Never-ending tasks of printing documents, copying, filing or doing research in the basement? Writing memos nobody reads? Or even making coffee and biding your time in a separate room with all the other trainees who are bored like you? This is how your traineeship should not be – and will never be at ASJ!

Our goal is to provide you with a realistic impression of what working as a lawyer in an international setting looks like. We therefore generally treat you just the way we treat our new associates, i.e. let you join in the work on exciting and usually international cases, client meetings, drafting of actual legal documents and not just memos and we always provide you with timely, honest and valuable feedback. Additionally, we try to give you an outlook of the various interconnections of your work within the specific cases you are working on.

We will take us time for you and – since you will not work with just one lawyer – give you the chance to work on various projects in different legal fields. To give you a realistic insight into the tasks of a newly hired associate, we purposely only employ one trainee at a time (although it may happen that two trainees’ schedules overlap for one/two weeks due to the handover of unfinished tasks). You also will not be seated in a separate room without contact to the other team members, but will be given your own work space within the main office next to all the other members of our team. It is important for us to get to know you and to give you the chance to really get to know us, since we regard you as a potential future colleague.

Therefore, if you are looking for a place to just relax or prepare for upcoming exams, our office is not the right place for you. If, however, you are looking for a challenging and interesting experience, where you can gain valuable insights into the work of a business oriented international lawyer, then we welcome your application.

Application

Traineeships are available throughout the year and applications are accepted on an ongoing basis year-round until all positions are filled. Applicants are advised to apply as early as possible. Legal Clerks should apply slightly before or, at the latest, at the beginning of the Legal Clerkship (Referendariat).
